I just received notice that my Ancestry membership will renew for $229.00 for 6 months.
Does anyone else think this is too much? I've been with them for years. It was OK when I
was working, but I've been retired for 21 years now.

Looks like their percentage annual increase is more than the rate of inflation.

With wikitree.com being totally free, I may have to depend more on that than I do with
    ancestry.com

    Poo.

Way too much - especially since most of the users are the ones doing all the work today. They (website) initially scanned had started scanning items from Nellis Island, etc., but most of us are the ones keeping the site alive. I haven't renewed mine for years now -- especially after never being able to locate my Father's side of the family. I was able to trace my entire Mother's side all the way up, but my Father's side seemed to not exist. I put in his name, his parent's and siblings names -- never got a pretty leaf anywhere. I found more out using my daily search engine than from there site. And, it didn't cost me anything.

I DID pay to renew. Let me know if you need some assistance. In the meantime, I
recommend going to http://wikitree.com to create your free account, upload your
Gedcom and let them do the research for you.

    Thanks, Mike,
I did browse wikitree and it had zero hits even with all information added for the search as well :(

Around 2017 or so, I had a 1-year membership with ancestry.com when they had a deal (I thought it was around $100 or $120 for the year or something). $229 for 6 months does seem a bit high.

I wish that I could say it is worth the money, but it really isn't. I help others out with
their research, but no one is paying for that service. They know it is something that I
enjoy doing, and I never ask for any money.

If I could just get a few people to pay me, it would help to defray the costs. Oh well!
