• Cloud vs Physical

That Friday buyday is a great thing to know,
However over in the video chat there's currently a good discussion physical media going on.
It's not just music but so much is moving toward the digital and I've had my issues and concerns. iTunes took back music on my devices. AutoDesk CAD has shut down stand alone copies of CAD that users bought with keys. I agree entirely with Less is More, but there's some security in owing the media that I'm missing myself.

How does that work? I have many purchased iTunes tunes and they
    all work just fine.

    How do they do that?

Apple has faced some class action lawsuits in the US over this: https://9to5mac.com/2021/10/20/itunes-purchased-content-removal/

"The complaint further notes that "when a licensing agreement terminates for whatever reason, Apple isrequiredto pull the Digital Content from the consumers' Purchased Folder and it does so without prior warningto the consumer"."

So if a customer purchases a song and keeps it "in the cloud" to stream whenever they like, this track candisappear without notice. Now if when you purchase the song, download it at the time of purchase & keep thefile on your own computer, they can't take that back or delete it as purchased tracks are DRM free. Howeverif you go back to download it again at a later time & Apple has lost the rights, it won't be in your purchasehistory.

I've had this happen to me on 7Digital:

Lucky for me I downloaded these FLAC files and still have them, but I won't be able to re-download in thefuture if I happen to loose them.

Well, I think it has to do with registry and update.

With iTunes the final straw was getting a new device and in the process of synchronization which I hadn't been doing regularly my on device database was cross checked with their system. I had what I'd call non conforming files, I don't know what Apple calls it, but they were gone. I had songs by artists who pulled tracks from the iTunes for some reason, perhaps copyright? Gone.
Autodesk likewise needs you to sign in for some features. I suspect this is all in the fine print we can agree to or not use their stuff?
I'm not a musician, but I am a draftsman and I've seen personally the AutoDesk license environment clamp down hard post COVID. Most seads of AutoCAD have a dual license. The idea was that you'd have a copy at the office and one on your laptop. What happened was that clever folks would split that between two employees.
I like cloud based software solutions in that I don't generally have to worry about updates and such, the downside is what I've just described. Autodesk decided that it wasn't going to support old software. Ian Davis who'd a machinist on YouTube working on prosthetics did a video on it. The Title was So Much for Permanent Stand Alone Licensing. I think he tried to reinstall his stand alone copy of CAD and was told they would not honor his old license and that he had to buy a new one via a subscription basis. It's not like you have the software on the disk anymore, you have an installer with some of the software package. It calls home and you put in your old key and whoa there fella... that's a 2013 version key.. we don't support that anymore.
I love the fine print, but in reality your choice when presented with it is accept it or go away. It's not like we have any power to negotiate terms.

In this case, I think it's a different concern. When it's about having backup copies, using different services for backups, especially with cloud computing such as Amazon Web Services S3 Glacier (in case you're a company) might be a good option to consider.

When it's about music, I used to buy lots of CDs back in the day, however now I'm thinking about it a lot in terms of physical storage (considering that now I'm tending to have things tidied up as much as possible, and too much CDs can be a problem in keeping them in order), and tendencially today I buy a digital copy of the album over a physical one, albeit sometimes when I find occasions to buy CDs (for like a buck) why not getting a CD and ripping it into my cloud collection?

Another thing I have to say regarding Bandcamp: when you buy music there and create an account, you can re-download your purchases for free (and in any format: MP3, FLAC, OGG etc...) as they get added to your Bandcamp library.

This, however, doesn't work for free downloads (or when you offer 0 when it's allowed), in that case, I just store my free downloads using another cloudlocker service called iBroadcast.
