I was never much of a concert person. I saw 3 concerts in the UK before moving to the US. We were at a Metal Shop (hair band/arena rock cover band) show and they did a Poison song. My wife they might be cool to see. 10 minutes later I had Poison tickets, supported by Cheap Trick. It sort of went from there. Since then I've traveled to Portland, OR, Northampton, MA and St Louis, MO to see Steve Hackett, Charlotte, NC to seee Genesis, Mark Knopfler in both Dallas and Phoenix, Pet Shop Boys and New Order in Seattle, WA, Jean Michel Jarre in New York, Houston, Dallas, and San Jose, A-ha in Los Angeles. Also in Dallas have seen OMD, Joe Jackson, Colin Hay, The Monkees, Erasure, Howard Jones supported by Men Without Hats and opened by All Hail the Silence - great synth group.

So you ever go to see tribute or cover bands? Dallas has a huge list of cover bands and tributes. A good thing and a bad thing, makes it difficult for original bands to get their foot in the door. Not that there's much good music these days anyway, kiddie bands, manufacturerd and computer generated pop and autotune trap has destroyed music.

For not being much of a concert person, I think you've seen more concerts than I have. :) I've seen Rush a few times, Paul McCartney twice, Blue Man Group a couple times, Paul Simon once, Mark Knopfler once, and Trans-Siberian Orchestra once.
I don't see tribute/cover bands as much as original bands. My dad was in a local cover band for quite a while though, and I always enjoyed seeing them. His friend is still in the band, and every once in a while I'll go watch them.
I'm jealous that you got tickets to see The Cure. Sadly, their Denver show is at probably the worst venue in the area, which has *really* wide wings, and
if you don't get tickets *early* then it's just a miserable show. By the time
I got in, all of the good seats were gone. We saw them at RiotFest a few years ago and they were absolutely brilliant! A really good show.
Haha, fair enough, you got me there. I'm not a big Cure fan, more my wife's thing but I don't dislike their stuff. TMBG were never on my radar. I think it's an American thing so she's off to see them with a friend. I'm a big Genesis fan so Mike and the Mechanics is a natural. You probably know more stuff of theirs than you realize.
Dallas even tho I had to pay for the tickets lol. Talking of birthdays, I saw Phil Collins a few years ago on my birthday. He didn't bring me a cake tho :)
How was the Paul Simon show?
I wasn't a big McCartney fan. Never into the
Beatles. I found Wings music to be somewhat basic and uninteresting. The late 70's and early 80's saw syncpop and new wave and he was playing Mull of Kintyre.
Back in England, my first concert was A-ha. Genesis twice in 1992 and Dire Straits the same year. Lisa Stansfield opened for Genesis at the first concert. Lyle Lovett and his Big Band and Was Not Was opened for Dire Straits... segway...
Lee came out and I shouted, can I have an autograph please, he smiled when he saw me waving his book around. I was the only person waiting, and I didn't even have a ticket for the show! Anyway, I said, you have to flip me off first, which he did with a "f..k you". I gave him a "f..k you back" with a flip and we had a nice conversation. We laughed about the lack of anything to read in the book. He signed it "To Nigel. Few words, but best wishes". He was really cool and wish I had more time to chat.
Colin Hay signed my concert tickets because I already picked up a signed album from the merch table. I have a couple of Jean Michel Jarre signed items, and several Steve Hackett items too.
Probably the cream of the crop was meeting Thomas Dolby, such a pioneer. I have Golden age of Wireless signed but it got a little smudged.
I'd love to be in a cover band but I just don't have the time to put into the practice that's needed. While I can play by ear, sort of, I have a hard time picking out the nuances especially for multi layers synth songs. I thought a Pet Shop Boys tribute would be fun. They have a ton of songs that everyone knows and I could probably recreate the majority of the songs on my Korg Kronos, but it's time.
Phil Collins would be good to see.
How was the Paul Simon show?
I thought it was pretty good. It was around 2005, I think, and I remember him playing some of his older Simon & Garfunkel songs and some from his Graceland album etc..
I think that's the thing about it - It's music that's easy to listen to and fun when you feel like that kind of thing. I liked the Beatles too. I suppose I have a range of music I like..
It would have been fun to see some of those bands back then. I was a bit young to be going to concerts at that time though.

Yeah, I know he did some good stuff (one song of his I can think of is 'He Blinded Me With Science'; I don't remember offhand what else he did).
Yeah, I've often thought it would be fun to be in a cover band. I've just never tried to actually do it.. I'd also need to practice more, which is also something I just haven't done as much as I probably should.
Back in the day maybe. He's passed it now. During the Genesis show he
had 2 backing singers. He just can't carry it like he used to. It got
old real quick. That's what ploughing through 3 marriages including a gold-digging bitch will do you. I think he got drunk and fell off a
ladder or something.
Yeah, he's had really bad back issues for years, I believe. I'm pretty sure that he gave a 'farewell' show a few months back that looked like it was almost certainly legitimately going to be his 'farewell show'. (Unlike a lot of artists who run a new 'farewell tour' every two years...no names mentioned (Elton John...I'm talking about Elton John...))

Information Society, Trans-X, Missing Persons, Wang Chung, Flock of
seriously envious now :)
Over here the big acts come in our summer time but because it's such a trek we don't see that many and those who do come may only travel as far as either Auckland (our biggest city), Wellington (our capital city) or Christchurch (the largest city in the South Island, about 4 hours drive north of where I am in Dunedin). :(

You have the same problem as we do here. A lot of bands miss Texas for some reason. Genesis were huge here in the 80's and they've not been
here since, I guess, 1992ish. I've had to travel to see some of the
bands I really wanted to see. A-ha only did 3 shows in Los Angeles, then
I found out they added a couple in New York and another at the Hollywood Bowl. I would see them again if they came around.

I really enjoyed that concert, Adam Lambert stuck the right tone with the audience from the get go, he was there not to replace Freddy but to honor his work... and from the start of the concert everyone was on board.

Oh man, Lambert absolutely nailed it. Like he said, he's not there to replace Freddy, nobody could ever replace Freddy, but to bring his songs alive in such an authentic manner, it was a much better show that I
could have imagined. I don't think there was one person walking out who wasn't satisfied.

Totally agreed.. But I dunno if you remember there was a governor here that pulled MLK day as a state holiday a while back.. We couldn't get the Superbowl until that came back. It's not quite like what you're referring to, but it was probably part of the beginning.
Here it was the voters voted about 51% against making MLK a new holiday IIRC they replaced a different holiday with MLK day a couple years late
