What's the proper way to study for a license (preferably without buying the 35$ book)?
I'm not 100% sure if I will pursue ameatur radio, but it wouldn't hurt to study in advance?

    Hi,
Take a look at hamstudy.org I think it is.
Take the practice tests until you score 90% or better and you should be good to go.

This is a little late, but I used a book called "No Nonsense Technician Class License Study Guide" by Dan Romanchik on Kindle.

In Alabama there's the Central Alabama Volunteer Examiner Coordinator (CAVEC) its like $10 to take the exam with them. www.cavechamexam.com

It seems like $10 is the standard, which doesn't seem unreasonable given the fact that you're asking at least one person to take a few hours out of their day to help you pursue a hobby.

If you can find a local amateur radio club a lot of times they offer classes, sometimes for free or pretty low cost. Also, when you go to take the test, there's two different testing groups at least in my area. One was volunteer group and the cost was a lot less than the other.

... No one knows what's next, but everybody does it.

Look for one of these. Charging for testing is LAME. As is the ARRL.

Apparently the FCC now charges $35 .. that should be your entire cost or you've done it wrong.. lol
